I think that 1984 is a year and a place who represent the science fiction novel or anticipation novel (i don't know if you use that expression). When Orwell wrote it, it was in the futur but we still read it a lot and the fact that it is in the past doesn't change the meaning. But, almost like an eponymic novel (an "eponymic time"), this year represent the commonplace of anticipation (i hope it's clear, in French we say "lieu commun" ou "topos" in litterature).
So when Murakami is writing nowadays, he is writing in a world post anticipation. The question of writing had been very problematic for writers after world wide 2, and even if the technologie wasn't there at the time it's easy to see how the objectisation of people is alike a lot of science fiction novel. And the end of the world happened in Hirohima and Nagasaki.
Big brother happened in a lot of ways. And in a short novel, there was the TV people, small humans who bring tv in somebody's home without being expected or anything, and i'm not sur but maybe they sing "ho, ho,ho" lie the little people.
At last, Aomame realize she is in another world because things have already change around her. The first event is the policeman with bigger gun since a long time ago. I don't have the other exemples but i think it hit me several time.

This is a nice analysis. Having just finished the book I haven't been able to form any conclusions of deeper meaning. The relationship between madness and the creative act is a wonderful observation.
I wonder too if there is any significant relationship to Orwell. Its been a while since I read 1984.

Other people have written about that connection a lot. I suppose Murakami must have a reason he chose to make it "1Q84" and not "1Q83" or "1Q85," but frankly, I was never once reminded of Orwell's book while I was reading Murakami's book.
