Nobody has brought me anything for a very long time\u00a0and I’m getting anxious.\u00a0I’ve been waiting and waiting for a gift or an acknowledgment of some sort\u00a0but nothing’s been forthcoming and I’ve been sitting on my chair in the middle of my box and I can’t think what to do with myself next if something doesn’t occur.<\/span><\/p>\n

DAVID<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

My dear.\u00a0You’ve done well.\u00a0By coming through that door and bringing me this tiara\u00a0with that golden ring with that giant diamond on top of it,\u00a0which is exactly the gift I had in mind,\u00a0you’re doing something proper, to tempt me and steel me against my own sense of vindictiveness.<\/span><\/p>\n

CASSIE<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong>They say King Arthur was one of the most generous kings.\u00a0He kept his temper in check. And his knights, his beloved knights,\u00a0he would regale them with honor whenever they brought him something of especial value.<\/span><\/p>\n

DAVID <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

A kind of gentle, powdery snow\u00a0which fell like flour over the fields so that everything was smoothed and equalized\u00a0into a kind of blank, smooth whiteness,\u00a0so that choice was impossible in this field of complete equality.<\/span><\/p>\n

CASSIE<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

And cold\u00a0Isn’t it cold?\u00a0Equality is chilly on the flesh.\u00a0One wants some kind of tension, does one not?\u00a0Some sort of heat?<\/span><\/p>\n

DAVID<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Cheeks.\u00a0The pain, the red, rosy, the cold tearing at the cheeks.\u00a0The spitefulness, the spitefulness of equality.<\/span><\/p>\n

CASSIE<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Jealousy.\u00a0The heat of jealousy.\u00a0I want this, that I don’t have\u00a0or I want that that you have or\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

I’m blushing.<\/span><\/p>\n

DAVID<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

I want that lemon!\u00a0There’s something I want, and I want a lemon!\u00a0I want a lemon right in my face, in my throat!\u00a0I want to be filled with a kind of lemony displeasure.<\/span><\/p>\n

CASSIE<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Very well.\u00a0Right, then.\u00a0Exactly as you wish.<\/span><\/p>\n
